What is hymenoplasty?
Hymenoplasty, also called hymen repair or hymen reconstruction, is a minor gynecologic procedure that restores a thin membrane across part of the vaginal opening. The surgeon identifies the remaining hymenal tissue (the small remnants that persist after the hymen has stretched or torn) and joins those edges with very fine absorbable sutures.
The hymen itself is a fold of mucous membrane at the entrance of the vagina. It varies enormously from woman to woman: some are born with very little hymenal tissue, some have a crescent or ring shape, and others have an elastic membrane that stretches rather than tears. Tampons, sport, gynecologic examinations and intercourse can all change its appearance, which is why the look of the hymen is not a reliable marker of sexual history.

Who considers hymenoplasty?
Women request hymen repair for personal, cultural, religious or emotional reasons, and we do not ask you to justify your decision. Common situations include:
- An upcoming marriage in a family or community where an intact hymen is expected
- A wish to restore a sense of closure after a non-consensual experience
- Injury to the hymenal tissue from an accident, sport or a medical procedure
- A previous hymen repair that healed open or did not give the hoped-for result
- A personal preference, without any external pressure, to have the tissue restored
You should be in good general health, not pregnant, and free of active vaginal or pelvic infection on the day of surgery. How Dr. Yoon performs hymen repair at Somssi
Every case begins with a private consultation in English and a gentle examination. Dr. Yoon assesses how much hymenal tissue remains, how elastic it is and where the remnants can be brought together without tension. This determines which technique is suitable.
Simple re-approximation
When enough tissue remains, the edges of the hymenal remnants are lightly freshened and sutured to each other with fine absorbable thread. The sutures are placed so that the raw healing surfaces lie flat against each other and bond as they heal. A central opening is always preserved so menstrual flow and normal secretions can pass.
Flap-based reconstruction
When very little hymenal tissue is left, a thin flap of vaginal mucosa from just inside the opening can be used to build a new membrane. Anesthesia, duration and hospital stay
Hymenoplasty is performed under local anesthesia, with light sedation added if you prefer to have no memory of the procedure. A long-acting local anesthetic keeps the area comfortable for several hours afterward. The operation itself takes roughly 30 to 60 minutes.
There is no overnight stay. You rest in the recovery area, and once you have urinated and feel steady you return home or to your hotel the same day. If you choose sedation, please do not drive; arrange a taxi or ask a companion to accompany you.

Results and what to expect
A well-healed repair restores a thin membrane that partly covers the vaginal opening and looks natural on examination. Because the tissue is your own and the sutures dissolve, nothing artificial is left behind.
It is important to be honest about one point: hymen repair cannot guarantee bleeding at first intercourse. Many women with a never-operated, intact hymen do not bleed, because the membrane is elastic or already has a wide natural opening. Results also vary with how much tissue was present, how carefully aftercare instructions are followed, and the timing of intercourse relative to healing. Operating too close to the date risks an incompletely healed repair. Operating well in advance is rarely a problem, because a healed repair does not weaken with time.
Risks and how we reduce them
Hymenoplasty is low-risk, but it is still surgery. Possible complications include bleeding, infection, wound separation (the sutured edges coming apart), hematoma, excessive narrowing of the opening that makes later intercourse painful, over- or under-correction, scarring, and the rare risks of anesthesia. A small number of repairs heal open and may need a second procedure.

Will a partner or a doctor be able to tell that I had hymen repair?
A well-healed repair uses your own tissue and absorbable sutures, so there are no visible threads or implants once healing is complete, usually by six weeks. On examination the membrane looks like natural hymenal tissue. Healing lines are very fine and sit within folds of mucosa, so even a gynecologist would find it difficult to distinguish a healed repair from a native hymen.
Does hymenoplasty affect periods, fertility or future childbirth?
No. The repair involves only the thin membrane at the vaginal entrance. A central opening is preserved so menstrual blood flows normally, and the uterus, cervix, ovaries and vaginal canal are untouched. There is no effect on your ability to conceive or to deliver a baby. The membrane will simply stretch or tear with intercourse, as a natural hymen would.
Can I use tampons or have a pelvic exam after the surgery?
Please avoid tampons, menstrual cups and anything inserted into the vagina for at least six weeks, because inserting an object can stretch or tear the healing membrane. Use pads during that time. A speculum examination would also disturb the repair, so tell any doctor you see during this period that you have had vaginal surgery and ask them to defer internal examination.
Is hymenoplasty legal in South Korea?
Yes. Hymen repair is a lawful elective gynecologic procedure in Korea, offered by licensed obstetrician-gynecologists in registered medical facilities. There is no legal requirement to notify or obtain consent from a partner, parent or spouse for an adult patient. Your records are confidential under Korean medical privacy law.
Can the procedure be done on the same day as my consultation?
Often, yes. If the examination shows no active infection, you are not menstruating heavily and you have fasted for a short period as instructed, Dr. Yoon can frequently perform the repair the same day under local anesthesia. Many international patients prefer this because it shortens the trip. You will still have time to ask every question before consenting.
What if I am menstruating on my planned surgery date?
Light bleeding does not prevent surgery, but heavy flow makes the field harder to keep clean and can increase infection risk. Where possible we schedule the procedure in the week after your period ends. If your cycle is unpredictable, let us know when you book and we will build a little flexibility into your plan.
