Vaginal Rejuvenation in Seoul: Surgical and Non-Surgical Options

Vaginal rejuvenation is an umbrella term for treatments that restore the tone, support and comfort of the vagina after childbirth, aging or menopause. At Somssi Women's Clinic in Gangnam, Seoul, the core treatment is a surgical repair of the posterior vaginal wall and pelvic floor using your own tissue, with a separate program for postmenopausal narrowing and dryness. Energy-based devices (laser, RF, HIFU) give milder, temporary effects and are discussed during consultation.

What is vaginal rejuvenation?

"Vaginal rejuvenation" is a marketing umbrella, not a single medical procedure. It covers surgical repair of a stretched vaginal canal and pelvic floor (vaginoplasty, posterior colporrhaphy, perineoplasty), energy-based devices such as CO2 or Er:YAG lasers, radiofrequency (RF) and HIFU, and injectables such as fillers or platelet-rich plasma.

Because the term is so broad, the first job of any consultation is to translate your symptoms into a diagnosis. Looseness after childbirth, a descending uterus, a painful narrow entrance after menopause, dryness, recurrent vaginitis and stress incontinence are different problems with different treatments.

Somssi Women's Clinic is a surgical gynecology clinic in Gangnam, Seoul, founded in 2000 and led by Dr. Yoon Ho-joo, MD, PhD. Our flagship approach is reconstructive: we repair the posterior vaginal wall and pelvic floor with your own tissue, and we run a dedicated program for postmenopausal women. We will also tell you plainly when pelvic floor training, hormone therapy, a pessary or no treatment at all is the better fit.

Who is a good candidate?

You may benefit from the surgical program if you recognize yourself in one or more of these situations:

  • A loose or wide vagina after vaginal birth, especially after a difficult labor or a large baby, with reduced sensation for you or your partner.
  • Air or water entering the vagina, a "whooshing" sound during intercourse or exercise, or secretions pooling inside and causing odor or recurrent vaginitis.
  • A feeling of heaviness or of "the bottom falling out", or a cervix that sits low in the canal (early uterine descent).
  • Mild stress urinary incontinence alongside laxity.
  • After menopause: a dry, narrow or painful entrance, or a canal that has shortened so that intercourse hurts or has stopped.
  • A previous vaginoplasty, laser course or filler that did not help, or that left a tight opening with a loose interior.

Other options serve some women better: mild laxity with good muscle bulk (pelvic floor training or an EMS Kegel device first), a pregnancy planned soon, or advanced prolapse that reaches or passes the opening, which needs a full pelvic organ prolapse assessment rather than a tightening procedure.

How Somssi performs surgical vaginal rejuvenation

Measure first

Dr. Yoon begins with a pelvic examination and ultrasound, then measures vaginal length, width and wall thickness and assesses pelvic floor contraction. A normal adult vagina is about 8–9 cm long; when the canal has shortened toward 5 cm and the cervix sits low, the problem is support, not only laxity.

The Female Vaginal Rejuvenation Program

Our main procedure is a posterior colporrhaphy-type repair that starts deep, at the posterior fornix in front of the cervix, and works outward to the opening. This is the reverse of opening-first techniques, and it is why the inner canal, not just the entrance, is treated.

  1. Mucosal peeling under 1 mm. The lining of the posterior wall is lifted with fine ophthalmic micro-scissors rather than cut away. Dr. Yoon considers the thinned wall of a lax vagina, often only 2–3 mm, too delicate for cutting instruments or lasers.
  2. Hysteropexy. If the uterus has descended, it is lifted about 2–4 cm and fixed by tying the supporting tissue around the cervix. The uterus is preserved.
  3. Pelvic floor restoration. The inner muscles are gathered toward the midline to rebuild a thicker posterior wall (the clinic aims for 2–3 cm) and raise resting pressure.
  4. Two-layer suturing. A first fold suture closes the muscle layer; a second fusiform suture reinforces it and gives the lining a ridged, washboard-like surface. Absorbable thread is used throughout.
  5. Opening and perineum. A figure-8 strengthening stitch at the entrance and, where needed, perineal reconstruction complete the repair.

The anterior (upper) wall, which lies against the urethra, bladder and the sensitive G-spot area, is deliberately left alone. For step-by-step detail see posterior colporrhaphy and native tissue vaginal surgery.

The postmenopausal program

After menopause the problem is often the opposite of laxity: an entrance that has narrowed and tears, or a canal that has shortened. The program is built from three surgical elements, vaginal dilatation (opening, inner or full), expansion of a small painful entrance, and inner-only tightening where the interior is loose. It can be combined with hormone therapy (estrogen, progesterone or low-dose testosterone as tablets or vaginal cream) after a review of your personal risks.

Anesthesia, duration and hospital stay

Surgery takes about 50 minutes to an hour. Most patients choose sedation ("sleep") anesthesia combined with a mix of long-acting local anesthetics, so you wake without a painful memory and the area stays numb for hours; local anesthesia alone is possible if you prefer. A non-narcotic anti-inflammatory is injected at the end of surgery.

There is no overnight stay. You walk out of the operating room, may shower the same day and are discharged once you have urinated. Fast for two hours before your visit, wear loose clothing and remove nail polish.

Recovery timeline

When What you can do
Same day Walk, shower, return home or to your hotel
Day 1 Desk work, light housework, normal walking; oral medication for about 5 days
Week 1 Absorbable sutures largely dissolved; golf and light exercise
Weeks 2–6 Follow-up checks, 0–5 sessions depending on symptoms; patients abroad can manage aftercare remotely
Week 6 Vigorous lower-body exercise, yoga, running, cycling, bathing, sauna
Weeks 7–8 Intercourse; internal photographs confirm the final result once swelling has settled

No sitz baths are needed. If you are traveling from abroad, our complete guide for international patients covers how long to stay and how follow-up works from home.

Results and what to expect

The aim is a canal closer to its pre-pregnancy length and diameter, a thicker posterior wall that contracts, a supported uterus and an entrance that is neither too tight nor too open. Many patients describe better friction and sensation, fewer vaginitis episodes and less heaviness. In the clinic's experience the structural result does not stretch back, because muscle is repaired first and the lining second.

Results vary. Sensation and lubrication depend on nerve and blood supply, which the clinic reports regenerates into the thickened wall over roughly 4–6 months, so judge the final outcome at six months rather than six weeks. Surgery does not by itself treat low desire, relationship factors or hormonal dryness; those are addressed separately. Dr. Yoon's 2005 paper on colpoperineoplasty and sexual function and his 2018 study on hypoactive sexual desire disorder shape how we counsel on this.

Energy-based "rejuvenation" (laser, RF, HIFU) produces milder, temporary tissue effects and usually needs a course of sessions plus maintenance. We set out the differences on vaginal laser vs RF vs HIFU.

Risks and how we reduce them

Any vaginal surgery carries risk. The ones that matter here are bleeding, infection, wound separation, over- or under-correction (an entrance that is too tight, or an interior still loose), scarring, altered sensation, pain with intercourse, recurrence over the years, injury to the rectum or the cul-de-sac (peritoneum) during posterior repair, and reactions to anesthesia.

We lower these risks by peeling rather than cutting the mucosa, by staying off the anterior wall, by closing in two layers so that tension sits on muscle rather than on the lining, and by avoiding mesh and implants, which can erode or become infected. Dr. Yoon has performed this operation since 2000 and reviews every result with internal photographs.

Questions patients ask

Frequently asked questions

Short, honest answers. For anything personal, a consultation is the right place to ask.

See the full FAQ →

Is vaginal rejuvenation the same as vaginoplasty?

Not exactly. Vaginoplasty is one specific operation, a surgical tightening and reconstruction of the vaginal canal. Vaginal rejuvenation is the wider label that also covers laser, RF and HIFU devices, injectables and menopause programs. At Somssi the surgical form is the main treatment, so on this site the two terms often overlap, but we always specify which procedure is meant.

Does vaginal rejuvenation improve sexual pleasure?

It can, by restoring friction, muscle tone and a supported position of the uterus, and many patients report better sensation once nerves and vessels have settled over several months. It does not treat low desire or relationship issues on its own, and results vary. Dr. Yoon's published work on sexual function after posterior repair is one reason we discuss expectations in detail before surgery.

Can I have vaginal rejuvenation if I am postmenopausal?

Yes. Menopause is one of the most common reasons women come to us. The postmenopausal program is different from the tightening operation: it may involve widening a painful narrow entrance, releasing an inner narrowing, tightening only the interior, and discussing hormone therapy. A pelvic examination and ultrasound decide which combination fits you.

Will vaginal rejuvenation help urinary leakage?

Mild stress incontinence that occurs together with laxity often improves after the pelvic floor and perineum are repaired, because the muscles that support the urethra are strengthened. Severe incontinence needs its own evaluation and may require a dedicated continence procedure. We assess bladder symptoms at consultation rather than promising a cure.

How soon can I fly home after surgery?

You are discharged the same day and can do desk work the next day, so a flight within the first week or so is realistic for most patients. We prefer to see you at least once before you leave to check healing. Sutures dissolve on their own, and the clinic has long supported overseas patients with remote follow-up by message or video.

Does the clinic offer laser vaginal rejuvenation?

Our focus is surgical, own-tissue reconstruction. Dr. Yoon considers the thin posterior wall of a lax vagina unsuitable for laser treatment, and independent evidence for energy-based devices is still limited. We explain what lasers, RF and HIFU can and cannot do so that you can compare fairly, and we will say so if a device course is a reasonable choice for your situation.

Can vaginal rejuvenation be combined with labiaplasty?

Yes, posterior repair and labia minora reduction are frequently done in the same session under the same anesthesia. Labiaplasty adds roughly 40 minutes to an hour, heals in about two weeks, and intercourse is usually allowed after 2–3 weeks for the labia and 7–8 weeks for the vaginal repair, so the longer interval applies.
