Vaginal Tightening Surgery in Seoul: Mrs. and Miss Vaginoplasty
Vaginal tightening surgery narrows a vagina that has become loose and restores the muscle tone around it. Somssi Women's Clinic in Gangnam, Seoul offers two versions: Mrs. Vaginoplasty for women after childbirth or menopause, which also lifts a descended uterus, and Miss Vaginoplasty for women who have not given birth. Both use your own tissue, take under an hour and allow same-day discharge.

What is vaginal tightening?
Vaginal tightening is a surgical procedure that reduces the width of the vaginal canal and rebuilds the pelvic floor muscles that give it tone. The medical name is vaginoplasty or posterior colporrhaphy. Unlike energy treatments or injections, surgery changes the structure of the vaginal wall itself, so the result is designed to last.
Somssi Women's Clinic, a surgical gynecology clinic in Gangnam, Seoul founded in 2000 and directed by Dr. Yoon Ho-joo, MD, PhD, has focused on this operation for more than 25 years. The clinic distinguishes two versions based on a woman's history, because the problem to be solved is different in each.
Mrs. Vaginoplasty vs Miss Vaginoplasty
| Feature | Mrs. Vaginoplasty | Miss Vaginoplasty |
|---|---|---|
| Who it is for | Women after vaginal or cesarean birth, or after menopause | Women who have not given birth |
| Main problem | Widened canal, thinned wall, weak pelvic floor, often a descended uterus | Stretched canal and weak muscles; uterus still well supported |
| Uterine lift (hysteropexy) | Included when the uterus has descended | Not usually needed |
| Extent of repair | Posterior fornix to opening, with figure-8 reinforcement at the entrance | Posterior fornix to the hymenal ring; no visible change at the opening |
| Time | 50 minutes to 1 hour | 50 minutes to 1 hour; mini version about 30 minutes |
| Follow-up visits | 0–5 | 3–4 |
The full Mrs. procedure, including uterine suspension and culdoplasty, is described on our Vaginoplasty page. This page covers what both versions share and where Miss Vaginoplasty differs.
Who is a good candidate?
Mrs. Vaginoplasty may suit you if you have:
- Looseness or reduced sensation since childbirth, including after cesarean delivery
- A sensation of heaviness or of the uterus sitting low, or a cervix you can feel near the entrance
- Recurrent vaginitis, odor, or water entering the vagina when bathing
- Stress incontinence or a weak pelvic floor despite Kegel exercises
- Post-menopausal changes that have made intercourse less comfortable
Miss Vaginoplasty may suit you if you have not given birth but:
- Feel loose, or have been told so by a partner, and hear air escaping during intercourse
- Have noticed stretching after a termination of pregnancy or frequent intercourse
- Have weak pelvic muscles with little natural tone
- Have lost confidence in intimacy because of the above
Women with very mild symptoms may be advised to try pelvic floor training with an EMS device before considering surgery. Our guide Who Is a Good Candidate for Vaginoplasty? explains how Dr. Yoon makes that call.
How Somssi performs vaginal tightening
Assessment first
Every procedure begins with measurement: vaginal length (normally 8 to 9 cm), width, wall thickness and pelvic floor contraction, plus a pelvic ultrasound of the uterus and ovaries. Before-and-after internal photographs are taken so you can see the change yourself.
The shared technique
Both versions start inside, at the posterior fornix in front of the cervix, and work outward. The mucosa of the posterior wall is peeled, not cut, to under 1 mm using ophthalmic micro-scissors, because the vaginal wall is too thin for conventional cutting instruments or lasers. The pelvic muscles on each side of the peeled strip are gathered toward the center and tied, then the peeled tissue is folded and closed with a two-layer suture. The anterior wall, urethra and bladder are never operated on.
What is different in Miss Vaginoplasty
Because the uterus has not descended, no hysteropexy is needed. The narrowing extends from the front of the cervix down to the hymenal ring, so the opening itself keeps its natural appearance and there is no visible external scar. The aim is to return the canal to roughly its size at first intercourse (about one to one and a half fingers) and to restore contractility and elasticity. For milder laxity a shorter "mini" tightening of about 30 minutes is available.
Own tissue only
Neither version uses mesh, bands, silicone implants or fillers. Everything is done with your own tissue and absorbable sutures, which dissolve in about a week. Absorbable sutures also mean there is no removal visit, which is one reason the procedure suits patients who fly home soon after surgery. Read why this matters on our Native Tissue Vaginal Surgery page.
Anesthesia, duration and hospital stay
Surgery is performed under sedation combined with long-acting local anesthetics, or under local anesthesia alone if you prefer to stay awake and talk with the doctor. Either way, it takes under an hour. You walk immediately afterward and are discharged once you have urinated: a morning operation means going home at lunchtime, and a lunchtime operation means leaving in the afternoon. Fast for 2 hours beforehand and wear loose clothing.
Recovery timeline
| When | What you can do |
|---|---|
| Same day | Shower, walk, go home |
| Next day | Daily life and work; medication for about 5 days |
| About 1 week | Sutures dissolve; golf and light sport |
| 6 weeks | Running, cycling, yoga, bathing, sauna |
| 7–8 weeks | Intercourse |
Miss Vaginoplasty is usually followed by three to four short check-ups; Mrs. Vaginoplasty by zero to five, depending on symptoms. Patients from other countries or provinces can complete aftercare at home. The full schedule is in How Long Does Vaginoplasty Recovery Take?.
Results and what to expect
You can expect a narrower, more consistent canal and a stronger voluntary squeeze once healing is complete at around eight weeks. The "deflating" sound of air escaping usually disappears because the space that trapped it is gone. In the clinic's experience, sensation and lubrication are preserved and often improve over the following months as the thickened wall gains new blood supply.
Results vary with tissue quality, hormonal status and future childbirth. Surgery restores anatomy; it cannot by itself change desire or a relationship, and Dr. Yoon will say so plainly if he thinks surgery is not the answer to your concern.
Risks and how we reduce them
Possible complications include bleeding, infection, wound separation, over- or under-correction, scarring, altered sensation, pain with intercourse and recurrence of laxity after later childbirth. Because the posterior wall lies against the rectum, injury to the rectum or cul-de-sac is a recognized risk of any posterior repair. Sedation carries standard anesthesia risks.
The clinic reduces these risks by peeling instead of cutting, staying off the anterior wall, using no foreign material and sizing the canal to the cervix rather than over-tightening the entrance. Over-resection at the opening is a known cause of painful intercourse and reduced lubrication, and it is specifically avoided.

Questions patients ask
Frequently asked questions
Short, honest answers. For anything personal, a consultation is the right place to ask.
What is the difference between vaginal tightening and vaginoplasty?
In everyday use they mean the same thing. "Vaginal tightening" describes the goal; "vaginoplasty" and "posterior colporrhaphy" describe the operation that achieves it. At Somssi the term covers both Mrs. Vaginoplasty, for women after childbirth or menopause, and Miss Vaginoplasty, for women who have not given birth. Non-surgical treatments marketed as tightening, such as lasers or fillers, are a different category.
Can a woman who has never given birth really be loose?
Yes. Vaginal tone depends on the pelvic floor muscles and the thickness of the wall, not only on childbirth. Naturally weak pelvic muscles, stretching after a termination of pregnancy, or frequent intercourse can leave the canal wider than a woman would like, and the sound of air escaping is a common complaint. Miss Vaginoplasty was designed for exactly this situation.
Will anyone be able to tell I had surgery?
In Miss Vaginoplasty the narrowing stops at the hymenal ring, so there is no visible change or scar at the opening. In Mrs. Vaginoplasty the figure-8 reinforcement at the entrance heals inside the tissue and is not externally visible. Sutures are absorbable, so there are no stitch marks to remove. The clinic also keeps your records strictly confidential.
How tight will it be afterwards?
The goal is a natural size, not the tightest possible one. For women who have given birth, the canal is sized to the diameter of the cervix; for nulliparous women, to roughly the size at first intercourse. An over-tight opening causes pain and dryness and is one of the most common reasons women seek revision after surgery elsewhere, so it is deliberately avoided.
Is the mini tightening enough for me?
The 30-minute mini procedure is intended for mild laxity in women who have not given birth and whose pelvic floor is still fairly strong. If measurements show a thin wall, a wide upper vagina or a descended uterus, a full repair gives a more reliable result. Dr. Yoon will recommend the smaller procedure when it is genuinely sufficient.
How soon can I fly home?
You can walk and shower the same day and resume daily activities the next day. Because sutures dissolve on their own and follow-up can be done remotely, many international patients plan a stay of around a week so that healing can be checked once before they leave. Discuss your travel dates at consultation so the plan fits them.
